Instead of doing a recap of how eventful my 2011 was, I'm here to torture you with another meme. I know what you're probably thinking:

1. What did you do in 2011 that you’d never done before? Gambled in Las Vegas! Well, kinda... I fed the slot machines $50 over the course of four days and watched Adrian play blackjack and roulette. Risk-taker, I am not.
2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year? I didn't make any for 2011 and will probably avoid making them in the future.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth? Not really - just a bunch of coworkers and acquaintances.
4. Did anyone close to you die? My cousin passed away on Thanksgiving. He was a great man with a kind heart and soul and will be missed.
5. What countries did you visit? Just the good ole U.S. of A.
6. What would you like to have in 2012 that you lacked in 2011? Endless amounts of cash and booze.
7. What was your biggest achievement of the year? Sending Deanna off to college sans nervous breakdown.
8. What was your biggest failure? The photography challenge.
9. Did you suffer illness or injury? I sprained or pulled something in the torso area a few months ago. After a few visits to the doctor, I still don't know what happened.
10. What was the best thing you bought? Tickets to see Roger Waters perform The Wall @ the Verizon Center in July 2012! I had to see this show again.
11. Where did most of your money go? VCU *tear
12. What did you get really, really, really excited about? Deanna's graduation from high school and moving in with my best/boy friend.

NITB Wrap-Up

I am happy to announce that Project NITB has come to an end. Here is a quick summary of the results:

Did I cut back on personal spending? Majorly.
Was I perfect? No.
Did I save thousands of dollars? Nah.
Did I become more mindful of my spending? Yup.

What I would have saved went towards expenses for my teenager. Senior year is an expensive one, HFS! Prom, graduation, SAT, ACT, college apps, wisdom teeth extraction... the list goes on and on. For those of you with more than one child, my heart goes out to you. For REAL.

Getting rid of my credit cards was the most liberating part of NITB and I don't regret it for a second. I don't think credit cards are stupid or evil - they're just not for me.

I'm proud of myself for making it through -- it was easier than I thought it would be (much easier than the photography challenge debacle).

Farewell, NITB. Now bring on the Lulu and Anthro!

Just kiddin' - college starts on the 25th. Goodbye, savings account.

Day 1: A photo of myself

Chaos, I mean Wine in the Woods

Saturday's picture perfect weather drew thousands of people from the DC/Baltimore area (and beyond) to Columbia's Wine in the Woods. Here are some new lessons learned.

1) Get there around 11 a.m. before the gates open at noon... even if you purchased a ticket in advance! Lines start forming around this time - early birds get the best places to set up shop (e.g., in the shade near the stage).

Coolers are allowed! Chairs and a table are encouraged.

2) Bring a picnic lunch. The lines for food become insane and don't move very quickly.

3) Start samplin' as soon as they start pourin'. Find a wine you like, buy a bottle (or two), and go back to your personal oasis to relax and enjoy the day. By 1:30, the booths were packed with people [im]patiently waiting for a taste.

Elk Run's festival sangria was a huge hit! Here is the recipe:

Two parts Sweet Katherine
Two parts tonic water
One part orange juice

4) Don't expect all volunteers to be knowledgeable about the wines. Most of them are just there pour. If you want to chat with people who know all about the wines they are selling, check out Mt. Vernon's wine festival in the spring or fall.

5) Roll out early to avoid parking lot mayhem and traffic jams. Cops were already doing random sobriety checks when we left around 3:30.

A few pics from Sunday's Mt. Vernon wine festival. The ambiance and energy were lovely - Adrian and I had a great time together as usual. I was disappointed by the wine - Virginia grapes wish they could be like California's *turns nose up in air*

Unfortunately, we didn't get video of the poor guy falling down the hill with a glass of red wine in his hand that christened the front of his light-colored shirt so here is a short vid of some entertaining goats. I didn't really think it was a good idea for Adrian to pull a Captain Save-A-Goat. That was 20 samples of crappy VA wine talkin'.

Just Keep Running

Year two of the NYC Marathon lottery... "We're sorry. You have not been selected."

I'm relieved. I have absolutely no desire to run a marathon this fall. I've done it twice - the first was amazing; the second had me screaming "WHY?!" as I stumbled across the finish line.

The NYC Marathon lottery can deny applicants up to three years in a row - if you apply the fourth year, you are automatically IN. So maybe I'll get lucky next year when my mind and body are once again in sync with the idea of another 26.2. I will eventually conquer the Five Boroughs and that will end my glorious short-lived marathon career.

Missing in Action: The 120

On Saturday, Adrian, Vikram, and I braved torrential downpours, tornado warnings, and countless impassable vehicles going 15 mph to get to the Dogfish Head Brewpub in Rehoboth Beach. We were on a mission to taste and purchase the coveted 120-minute IPA – instead, we encountered one big fat dead end and a few other disappointments.

The DFH addicts:

Disappointment #1: No 120 at the Brewpub. DFH has been promising to release the"corrected" batch of 120 to customers for months now. I could have sworn I saw it listed on their website under "What's on Tap" earlier this month. Maybe I was seeing things.

Disappointment #2: I think our expectations were too high for the Brewpub. Nothing stood out or blew us away, food-wise. The menu and quality of food paled in comparison to our usual spot - DFH Alehouse in Gaithersburg.

I was especially disappointed with the fish and chips. I took a few bites and pushed my plate away in disgust. 45 thumbs down.

After our unfulfilling meal, we headed to the DFH brewery in Milton for the grand tour.

Disappointment #3: Still. No. 120. We experienced a moment of excitement when we saw 120 listed on the board in the tasting room; however we quickly found out it was not for sale that day. According to one of the employees, the 120 was bottled and ready to go. So what gives? Why are you holding out on us, DFH?! How about you stop listing it on your board if it’s not ready to go. Star or no star, it’s misleading.

The tour was brief and boring. I had to reserve tickets online months ago – they didn’t even check us in. Yeah yeah yeah, colossal containers of beer… aged in oak barrels, hops… barley… yeast… alcohol… blah blah blah. Where’s the f****** 120?!?

They gave us four tastings after the tour. Of course, the 90 was delicious.

Disappointment #4: I ate a Sonic burger on the way home. I live in an area where Sonic doesn’t exist yet their commercials do so I was curious. It was nasty. I still regret eating it two days later.

We will return to the Gaithersburg DFH soon for some beers and cheers (I have a coupon). I had a good time with Adrian and Vikram, despite our 120 fail.

Adrian and I went to Rams Head Live last night to see Sara Bareilles. My favorite part of the show was when the band did a cover of Mumford and Sons Little Lion Man.

Throughout the show, Sara was kind of annoying: "Are we having a f*cking good time or what?! F*ck yeah! We're not dainty! We came to rock the sh*t out of you!"

Please stop. You are considered pop/easy listening. It's ok. Accept it. We all have.

The opening acts were cool. Elizabeth and the Catapult stood out - I was impressed. Go Away My Lover was a crowd pleaser.

Rams Head Live is an awesome venue. I loved it and am looking forward to seeing more live performances there. The bar tenders make a damn good vodka soda.

As my 35th birthday month comes to an end, so does my daily blogging. About a month ago, I gave myself a challenge to post something once a day during my favorite month. I completed my goal and am heaving a sigh of relief – it isn’t easy coming up with something to publish on the net day after day.

So I’ll end my month of fluff on a serious note.

I’m in a happy place right now. I’m finally in love. And not just any kind of love – this type of love makes every past relationship look like a disaster. A mistake. A complete waste of time. On the other hand, I am grateful: Thank you for showing me what I don't want in a relationship.

For the first time in my life, I’ve finally found someone I can -- without a shadow of a doubt (he will probably make fun of me for using a cliché) -- spend the rest of my life with. Allowing this to happen has completely changed the way I view the world and I like it. I like it a lot.

Tonight, Deanna and I attended a VCU "banquet" for prospective and enrolled students. I don't know about you but when I hear the word banquet I think of a full meal. That wasn't the case but at least we had something to snack on:

Foxy Cleopatra

As I was walking toward my building last night, I spotted Foxy (she reminded me of a fox, hence the Foxy Cleopatra title). She was sauntering around the parking lot, looking confused and disoriented. I immediately recognized her from my neighborhood but had no idea where her owner lived.

I knelt down and she immediately scampered over and jumped into my arms. Her body was trembling from the cold and I could tell she was a bit frightened. I didn't see anyone nearby so I took her inside for a few minutes.

Roach (my Boxer) would have gone all Ike Turner on her so into the bedroom he went as I let Foxy warm up and get a drink of water. Fortunately, she was licensed, rabies vaccinated, and had a name tag with a phone number on it. I called the number several times but was sent straight to voice mail.

I knew Rambunctious Roach would have stressed out little Foxy if I kept her too long. The rental office was still open so I bundled her up in my arms again (she was so tiny, ya'll) and walked over to see if anyone had called about her. The property manager was sympathetic and said she would keep Foxy until she was claimed. As I went to leave, Foxy started running after me. It was cute. I'm 100% sure she will be reuinted with her owner; she was obviously loved and taken care of. Who knows how she got separated/lost - accidents happen. I'm just glad teeny tiny micro-Foxy wasn't run over by a car!

Mondays That Don't Suck

Another oh-so-easy recipe from Jenna @ Eat, Live, Run.

I was itching to cook this dish. It turned out just ok. I think it might taste better after the sauce has a chance to really work its way through the beef. I'm thinking it will taste much better tomorrow.

Beef Tenderloin with Apricot and Olives

serves 4

1 1/4 lbs beef tenderloin, chopped into large cubes

1 cup kalamata olives, roughly chopped

3 garlic cloves, minced

3 T red wine vinegar

1 cup apricot preserves

1 6-oz bag baby spinach

1 T olive oil

salt and pepper to taste

jasmine rice to serve

Brown the beef in the olive oil over medium high heat. When it’s medium rare, remove from pan, set on a plate and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Set aside.

Add the minced garlic to the same pan you cooked the beef in. Cook for about three minutes and then add the vinegar to deglaze the pan, stirring well to scrape up any brown bits. Add the apricot preserves and cook for four minutes, until the sauce bubbles and thickens. Add the olives, beef and spinach and heat through, cooking for a few minutes so that the spinach wilts and the beef finishes cooking.

Serve over jasmine rice.

Good Friends & Good Food

I didn't take any pictures at brunch today. I just wanted to savor the company of my friends as we enjoyed some really divine food. Volt is simply a cut above the rest. Every dish is celebrated and has a story behind it (although at times, it probably would have been ok not to hear every minuscule detail our server insisted on reciting: "You are eating cheese made from the milk of a goat that was raised and hand-fed by a Buddhist monk on sacred land until the age of 7 and 3/4"). I'm still a Chick-fil-A kind of girl but Volt just knocks my socks off and I can't wait to go back.

Sauce-less Spaghetti

This impromptu meal turned out very tasty so I had to share it with you (plus, I had to write it down so I don't forget)!

*Wine was not used in the recipe but I sure did enjoy a glass as I cooked and ate.

Ingredients:

olive oil
3 large cloves of garlic, minced
1 T red pepper flakes (omit if you don't like heat)
2 bags of baby spinach
1 pack/box of whole wheat spaghetti (or regular)
1 T butter
kosher salt
ground pepper
fresh parmesan/romano/asiago cheese (shredded or grated)

Preparation:

Chop the garlic and sprinkle some salt & pepper over it.
Cook the spaghetti until it is al dente. Drain the pasta (do not run cold water over it) and remove the pot from the burner.
Add the bag of spinach to the pot you used to cook the spaghetti.
Empty the hot spaghetti back into the pot, on top of the raw spinach and put a lid on it. The heat from the freshly cooked pasta will cause the spinach to wilt to perfection!
In a frying pan over medium heat, drizzle some olive oil (maybe 2-3 T - I just eyeballed it).
Right before the oil starts smoking, add the garlic, butter, and red pepper flakes. Sauté until the garlic is light brown (careful not to burn it).
Pour the sauce into the big pot of spaghetti and spinach and stir baby stir!
Add more salt & pepper to taste along with however much grated or shredded cheese floats your boat.

Enjoy:

Chicken would have been a nice addition to this recipe but I didn't have any in my freezer.

Now about that bottle of wine...

So yeah... my hair caught on fire yesterday.

One minute I was taking pictures of my homegirl Nancy:

Next thing I knew, I heard a faint sizzling sound: "Hisssssssssssssssss!!!" Leapin' lizards, I backed into a lit candle! My hand flew to the back of my head but it was too late. As I glanced down, I saw a layer of charred hair at my feet. It looked like a bunch of spiders having a meeting on a bed of black moss. The room smelled like roasted ASS - I was mortified! Thank GOD my entire head and/or body didn't ignite into flames.

Yvette snapped this pic right after I set myself on fiya. You can't really see the destruction which is a very good thing indeed:

This isn't the first time I set my hair on fire (I think I scorched my bangs off when I was 10 or 11) but hopefully, it will be the last.

Caramelized Onions and Potato Pancakes

I had some leftover mashed potatoes from Thanksgiving so I decided to make potato pancakes and top them off with one of my favorite things: caramelized onions. I used to hate onions - someone must have dropped me on my gigantic head when I was a child. Caramelizing onions is relatively easy but it takes a while. Plan on hovering over your stove for 30-45 minutes.

Vegetable Curry Win

I stumbled across this recipe via Eat, Live, Run. It was involved but worth all of the chopping, measuring, and simmering. It is a phenomenal dish and my house smells like heaven right now.

After the gazillion vegetables were chopped, it was spicy time:

Onion, carrot, sweet potato, fennel, garlic:

Tomatoes, chicken stock, ginger, and spice mixture getting very happy:

After the addition of coconut milk... mmmm:

Jasmati rice (hybrid of Jasmine and Basmati = fluffy and oh so tender):

Vegetarian Yellow Curry

serves 6

1 15-oz can diced tomatoes

1 1/2 cups water (I used fat-free chicken stock)

1 15-oz can coconut milk (light or regular)

1 15-oz can chickpeas, drained and rinsed

1 fennel, sliced into 1/4th inch thick slices

2 large carrots, peeled and chopped

1 large garnet yam, peeled and chopped

1 yellow onion, chopped

3 T fresh ginger, chopped

4 garlic cloves, minced

1 red bell pepper, chopped

2 cups broccoli florets

2 tsp ground coriander

2 tsp cumin seeds

2 tsp mustard seeds

1 tsp turmeric

1/4 tsp cayenne

1 tsp salt

1 T canola oil

Prepare all vegetables and set aside.

In a small saucepan over medium/low heat, toast the coriander, cumin seeds and mustard seeds gently for about four minutes to release maximum flavor. After toasting, add the cayenne, salt and turmeric and set aside.

In a large saucepot, combine the diced tomatoes, water, fresh ginger and spice mixture. Simmer for twenty minutes while you saute the vegetables.

Heat the canola oil over medium heat in a large skillet, add the onion and saute for about six minutes, or until the onion is soft and translucent. Add the garlic, fennel, carrot and sweet potato and cook for another five minutes, stirring often.

Blanch the broccoli florets in boiling water for thirty seconds (they will turn bright green). Drain and rinse under cold water. Set aside.

Add the coconut milk to the tomato mixture and then stir in the sauteed veggies, broccoli and bell pepper. Raise heat to a boil, then reduce to a simmer for thirty minutes, or until the carrots and sweet potato are tender. Stir in the chickpeas.

Serve curry on it’s own or with brown or jasmine rice. Cilantro is delicious on top!

Ruth's Chris used to be my favorite steakhouse; however on Friday, Ray's the Steaks gave ole Ruthie a run for her money. Adrian has been raving about this place for months and I finally got to see what the hype was all about. It was well-worth the 1.5 hour commute (the American Legion Bridge hates us all). This place is awesome and not nearly as pricey as most of the popular steakhouses. As one Urban Spoon reviewer so eloquently stated when comparing Morton's to Ray's: "Eat here. Or you're an idiot."

Roger Waters - The Wall

I missed Roger Waters when he came to DC on 10/10/10 so as soon as I realized that dreadful mistake, I went online and purchased my ticket for the 11/11/10 show in Philly. All I can say is HOLY CRAP I AM SO GLAD THAT I DID!!! The concert was of epic proportions (and I hate using the word epic but it's so appropriate) - I'd see it again and again if I could afford to. Here is a photo essay of my experience (taking pics with a crappy point-n-shoot at a concert is a challenge so bear with me).

When he performed Vera & Bring the Boys Back Home there was video of young children being reunited with their parents who had been deployed. I'll admit it - I got choked up.

In the Arms of the Angel

My heart is heavy once again. Today, we said goodbye to Luke, a close friend of Deanna's. Luke was killed by a hit-and-run driver. He was 18-years-young.

I learned a lot about Luke today. He was an only child. He was a friend to many. He had a passion for football and track. He loved to laugh. He was adored and respected by his teachers and peers. He had a mischievous side but at the end of the day, he was a good kid with a heart of gold. Luke loved living and being with his friends and loved ones. He was free-spirited, good-humored, and full of promise.

Luke was Deanna's first boyfriend. She went on her very first date with him. They went to the movies and became quite fond of each other. Despite not staying in a long-term relationship, Luke and Deanna remained friends over the years. They kept in touch and shared many mutual friends. Luke even wrote letters to Deanna when he lived away from home for a few months - in this day and age, when Twitter, Facebook, and text messaging are a teenager's first choice for communication, that said a lot to me about what type of person this young man was.

I watched in agony as Luke's parents said their final goodbyes to their only son. There wasn't a dry eye in the church. I held Deanna close as she quietly wept for her friend. Our hearts are aching right now. We will miss you Luke.

Dungeons and Tap Rooms

If given a choice, I'd rather have glass of red wine; however, I crave a cold beer every now and then. I met up with Adrian and Nicole on Monday to check out Brickskeller in DuPont. According to Brickskeller, they are "the world's first beer bar." Whatevs. It's a dismal spot, smells like decay, and has a ladies room that rivals most haunted houses; you can read more about it here.

I followed Adrian's lead and tried a beer on tap: "Bell's Hell Hath No Fury" which is a 7.7% abv Belgian dark abbey double style (whatever that means). It was rich and smooth - much better than Guinness. I liked it and would order it again.

I also sampled a Brazilian beer called Xingu. I had no idea it was going to look exactly like my first beer. The taste was ehhhh - drinkable, not nearly as good as the first.

I don't recommend this place but if you do go, check out whatever they have on tap. Don't waste your time getting excited over the extensive bottle list with beer from every country around the world - chances are, they are all out of your top choices.

Stop...Taper Time

Tapering has begun for Marine Corps Marathon. All that means is you dial-down the mileage and get lots of R&R before race day. Mentally, I'm prepared to tackle another 26.2 miles. We'll see how the physical aspect goes on October 31.

I'm dedicating this year's 26.2 to my friend Tracy. She will be running with me in spirit and I will finish especially for her.

Today, we said our final goodbyes to Tracy. I haven't cried this much in ages - it was so unbearably hard to watch her family, friends, and especially her inconsolable 12-year-old daughter struggle through the emotional ceremony. Tracy's mother's pain and anguish cut me to the core; when I got home, I hugged Deanna tightly. I don't know what I would do if I lost my one and only child.

I met Tracy through some of my close friends many years ago. I didn't see her often but when I did, she always had a huge smile on her face and would yell "Hey Susan!!!" She was forever cheerful, upbeat, friendly, and was someone you wanted to hang around with because she lit up the room and lifted everyone's spirits. Tracy was always telling hilarious stories - you were either laughing at or with her. She was hysterical! Her voice was sugary and sing-songy - what I wouldn't give to hear her boisterous laugh just once more...

This is the last picture I took of Tracy about a year ago (she's the one licking her fingers, LOL) - it is how I want to remember my silly, kind-hearted friend. We were partying it up in Georgetown and headed over to Johnny Rockets for some burgers and fries. After we overdosed on Cosmo's, those burgers were the best we'd ever had. What an awesome night that was.

Goodbye Tracy. We miss you. We love you. We will keep your memory alive as long as the sun rises and sets. We will look after your daughter and mother - they will not go through this alone.

Movies Worth Watching: Let Me In (Let the Right One In)

Let me start by saying that both are amazing movies.

Let the Right One In (Sweedish version) seemed more stylized and had less gore than Let Me In (American); however, the American homage had me on the edge of my seat with superior suspense-building via dismal music and impressive special-effects. Let Me In stayed true to the original story and gave me a deeper understanding of the relationships and circumstances of the pre-adolescent social outcast and his mysterious vampire girlfriend. There are a few interesting deviations from the original film but nothing is lost in translation - the story is compelling and mesmerizing. The final scenes for each movie were riveting and gave me the chills - sometimes, less is more.

13(.1) Fun Facts: 2010 Parks Half Marathon

I put the monster calves to work last Sunday as I ran my second Parks Half Marathon. Thanks to my friends Yvette and Rob, I finished strong. We paced each other and commiserated during the difficult run. Rather than bore you with a narrative…

The Parks Half Marathon celebrated its 5th birthday this year! The vast majority of the course travels through preserved parkland along the Rock Creek Stream Valley.
Running in the rain rocks.
Running “The Silencer” does not rock (The Silencer is a nasty hill – most people only grunt or groan while they run it. Or cry for their mommy).
Avoiding puddles slows you down – better to just run through ‘em.
Being in a Port-a-Potty when it is still pitch-black outside is even more terrifying than using them in general *shudders*
Saying “thank you” to the volunteers and cheering spectators makes you run faster.
Smiling through the pain and fatigue really does trick your body into thinking it’s not about to collapse.
Poor Yvette witnessed my evil twin emerge as someone yelled “You’re almost there!!” around Mile 6 or 7.
This year’s finish festival was kind of whack compared to last year’s. The line for food was redic!
Flying past people during the home stretch feels great.
We had to take Metro back to our cars after the race. The train full of tired and sweaty runners produced some interesting sights and smells.
Yvette, Rob, and I finished the race in 2:12. Not bad for some amateurs.
I think 13.1 is my new favorite distance. 26.2 can kiss my bumper.

Time to celebrate Nicole's birthday, yay! We dined at Buddha-Bar, one of DC's newest hot spots. The ambiance was top-notch. They have a really interesting specialty drink menu - I'd definitely go back for a happy hour.

Sana likes Buddha-Bar.

My chicken entrée was just ok. Too much fatty skin and dark meat, ick. The fingerling potatoes were fab.

Deanna is officially a senior now! One more year of breathing down her neck, making sure she completes every assignment, studies for exams, and turns in projects on time. This year will be challenging - she's taking pre-calc "just because" and a communications course for college credit; she's also captain of the cheerleading squad and they will be competing at least twice; AND this little lady works part-time.

I'm so proud of her.

From Baby to George Clooney

Roach is getting older. Seven dog years = approximately 49 human years. While I'm certain I have many more years with him, I can't help but notice the subtle ways he has slowed down in adulthood. I took him on an hour-long walk yesterday and by the end of our journey, he had lost the kick in his step and was walking behind me. He was still happy to be out and about but I could tell he was tired. I'm sure the sun and warm temps had something to do with it but we used to go on the same walk in even hotter temperatures and he would have crazy energy towards the end.

Last night, Deanna and I were teasing him and in a fit of Boxer play rage, he leaped onto my bed and started mauling me under the covers. He's still crazy and shows no signs of slowing down in that area.

Diana and Joe were married on top of a hill, overlooking the Sugarloaf Mountain ski trails. The view was breathtaking, and so was my cousin.
