Class of 2011

Deanna is officially a senior now! One more year of breathing down her neck, making sure she completes every assignment, studies for exams, and turns in projects on time. This year will be challenging - she's taking pre-calc "just because" and a communications course for college credit; she's also captain of the cheerleading squad and they will be competing at least twice; AND this little lady works part-time.

I'm so proud of her.

Cheers,
Susan

From Baby to George Clooney

Roach is getting older. Seven dog years = approximately 49 human years. While I'm certain I have many more years with him, I can't help but notice the subtle ways he has slowed down in adulthood. I took him on an hour-long walk yesterday and by the end of our journey, he had lost the kick in his step and was walking behind me. He was still happy to be out and about but I could tell he was tired. I'm sure the sun and warm temps had something to do with it but we used to go on the same walk in even hotter temperatures and he would have crazy energy towards the end.

Last night, Deanna and I were teasing him and in a fit of Boxer play rage, he leaped onto my bed and started mauling me under the covers. He's still crazy and shows no signs of slowing down in that area.

Roachmeister forever,
Susan

Weekend in Vermont: Part II - The Wedding

From start to finish, my cousin Diana's wedding was sheer perfection; it was the most down-to-earth wedding I have ever been to.

Check out the wedding invitations - Diana designed and created them herself:

Diana and Joe were married on top of a hill, overlooking the Sugarloaf Mountain ski trails. The view was breathtaking, and so was my cousin.

Weekend in Vermont: Part I

Vermont (in the summer) was everything I imagined and then some - beautiful weather (70's & sunny), fresh air, and the color green stretches as far as the eye can see. I was informed by many of the locals that their winters last from November to April/May (yikes). That was a sobering fact so I feel fortunate that I was able to visit the charming state during the warmer months.

The view from Aunt Eveline & Uncle Jim's house in Montpelier was beautiful - so many trees, mountains, and a crystal blue sky:

Montpelier, the capital of Vermont, is a delightful little town. It was Norman Rockwell-esque.

My sister, Deanna, cousin Theresa, and I stumbled upon a cheap eat called Skinny Pancake. They specialize in crepes stuffed with locally grown/raised foods that are to die for. I ordered the Garlique Chic - it was filled with diced chicken breast, homemade basil-sunflower seed pesto, roasted red peppers, caramelized onions, and shredded Cabot cheddar cheese (Fun Fact: Cabot is a Vermont-based cheese company). My stuffed crepe and salad was $9.95 - money well-spent.

Check out this awesome spider who has taken up residence on my aunt and uncle's balcony. He deserved his own zip code.

Off to the watering hole we went. I didn't get in but my sister and Deanna said it was brisk baby!

Two friendly little piggies at Lareau Farm in Waitsfield, VT (they were eating egg shells and God only knows what else):

Lake Champlain in Burlington, VT. It was rainy and foggy but if you look really hard, you can see NY's Adirondack mountains across the water.

Thumbs up,
Susan

NITB Update

A few weeks ago, I announced Project NITB. I've revised my rules to be a little more realistic. Budgets were made for entertainment, eating out, personal care, and gift-giving. I'm still refusing to shop for luxury items for myself for one full year. This is more of a personal quest I need to do to help me understand and hopefully eliminate the emotional attachment I have to buying new clothes, shoes, etc.

I am happy to say I have no more credit card debt. What little I did have is paid off and the accounts are closed. I have an emergency fund I will rely on in case something comes up. No more credit cards - for me, they provided a false sense of security and too much temptation.

Rock the Bells is coming up and I'll be missing out. I'm sad because I went last year and had a really good time with my friends. Lauren Hill is gonna be there - I've always wanted to see her live. Bummer.

Feeding the pig,
Susan

10:40A's Kick Ass 20-Miler

Only two more 20-mile training runs before marathon day in October. Despite the rain, mud, puddles, and two-mile incline towards the end, we finished strong. One of my pace group buddies mapped our loop with Gmaps Pedometer. As you can see, we were literally all over the place:

My mom recommended soaking in an Epsom salt bath so I took her advice and feel great right now! After our next long run, I'm going to try an ice bath and compare the two. I discovered some chafing on my right thigh after slowly submerging into the tub - a lonely tear crept out of the corner of my eye as I did my best not to scream. Salt water + freshly chafed skin = f*%@!!!

Exhausted,
Susan

Shake Your Money Makeover

My good friend "S" and I are embarking on a difficult journey to become debt-free. We have both read Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover and agreed to be each other's support system as we slowly make our way to financial freedom. I'm not going to tell you to run out and buy the book but if you happen to see it in stores, read the "What This Book is NOT" forward - Dave's simplistic yet aggressive approach at getting out of debt forever might entice you to read more. I like the straightforwardness of his plan and know I will make it through.

Update on Momma Moth

*Playing Taps* Rock Mothball has moved on to a better place. She passed away before she got to see her babies emerge from their pee-colored casings.

I noticed her eggs have changed colors. I'm not sure if this means some of the babies survived or if they're just dead embryos that have been cooked to death by the DMV's three-month heat wave. Only time will tell.

Kinda gross but cool at the same time,

Not in the Budget (NITB)

So I've decided to take part in a somewhat drastic experiment. Project NITB is in full effect. Here are some preliminary rules:

  1. No luxury shopping for one year (clothes, shoes, accessories, etc). My running shoes are the exception since they go "bad" after ~400 miles.
  2. I can only eat out once a month.
  3. I can buy ONE bottle of wine/month. This will be a difficult rule since I pretty much bleed cabernet sauvignon.
  4. No more salon pedicures; I'll do them myself (I'm getting tired of the nail technicians asking about my black toenails anyway).
  5. Buy everything with cash and track every nickel and dime that I spend no matter how trivial (e.g., $1.00 to the homeless guy on Great Seneca Highway).
More rules will be rolling in as I really get an idea of what my individual budgets will be for gas, car maintenance, groceries, personal care, entertainment, etc. I'm not giving up everything... just cutting back a substantial amount.

Will I miss out on a lot of fun stuff with my friends? Most likely.

Will I get frustrated and feel resentful of my stupid project at least once a week? Most def.

But will I save thousands of dollars? Hell to the MF YEAH.

I want my bank account to resemble my closet: filled with a lot of great stuff I don't use. Get it? I sure hope I can...

Wish me luck as I feed the pig,
Susan
