Happy Friday!
I saw this pretty green moth on the ground today; I believe it is a Luna Moth. Sadly, I don't think it was living anymore; I didn't bother trying to rescue this one.
Sleepy,

Et tu, Susan?

When I took Roach out for a walk this morning, I saw Rock Mothball on the ground. As I peered closer, I noticed a bunch of yellow balls coming out of its rear end. Alert! Was it guts? Eggs? Did someone try to kill it?
Deanna took this picture a few minutes ago. She said the moth is still alive. See those little yellow dots in the pic?
(LOL @ Deanna's long-ass toes)
So I Google image-searched "yellow moth" and found a pic that resembled Rock Mothball. One picture had imperial moth in the file name so I went to Wikipedia and punched it in. Check out photo A from the Wikipedia article - that is exactly what's coming out of the moth's butt.
I'm fascinated by most animals and insects (with the exception of mosquitoes, flies, ticks, and any other harmful bug) so I'm torn. Do I try to rescue the babies or let nature take it's course? According to Wikipedia, they only breed once a year and are slowly declining in population. The adult moths do not feed so I don't really have to worry about Momma Moth but still... her babies!

Deanna named this critter Rock Mothball. He/she has been hanging out in my building since last Friday - hasn't moved an inch. You can't really tell from the pic but it's a pretty good-sized insect (about the size of my hand from wing tip to wing tip). While I'm kind of freaked out by it, I can't help but admire it's leaf-like camouflage.
On Sunday, Will and I set off on an all-day adventure to the Big Apple to see the final performance of Fences, starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. After a rushed lunch at City Lobster, we headed over to Cort Theatre and squeezed into our seats. Cort is a small venue so the audience was packed like pickles but we quickly forgot about the awkward seating when the ensemble took the stage. For two hours, we had the pleasure of watching the phenomenal cast work their magic.
The story takes place in the 1950’s and is set in the backyard of the Maxson’s home. Troy Maxson (Washington) is an ex-Negro Baseball league player turned garbage man who eventually lets his selfishness and embitterment affect his loved ones. He adores his wife, Rose (Davis), and loves his family but allows things to fall apart and ultimately pushes everyone away.
It was a treat to see Denzel live and direct but for me, Viola Davis stole the show. She put so much passion, emotion, and intensity into her portrayal of Rose - the faithful and loving wife of 18 years who remains loyal to her husband after he turns her world upside down. Her performance was so powerful and riveting - I was holding my breath during a few of her scenes.
The supporting cast was oozing with talent. I was especially fond of Chris Chalk’s portrayal of Cory, Troy’s ambitious son, who could never seem to do right by his father and was always seeking his approval and love. Then there was the lovable and supportive Bono, played by Stephen McKinley Henderson, Troy’s best friend and co-worker who shared many conversations, laughter, and a token bottle of booze on paydays. Henderson and Washington had amazing chemistry and most of their scenes provided comic relief - you could tell they were genuinely having a great time together on stage.
As we were leaving, tons of people lined the street, hoping to get a glimpse of the cast as they exited the theater. It was an impressive sight.
For me, Fences was an intimate and honest portrayal of a family fighting to live. Show me one family that doesn't go through heartbreak, struggles, disappointment, pain, and betrayal... conversely, show me one family that doesn't love each other so much, they are willing to forgive the deepest and darkest sins all in the name of staying afloat to grow and thrive together. It reminded me of my family and all the shit we've been through - I could never give up on them and I hope they will always believe in me.
The show will go on,
Susan
